Valtrex (Valacyclovir) is used to treat herpes virus infections, including herpes labialis (also known as cold sores), herpes zoster (also known as shingles), and herpes simplex (also known as genital herpes) in adults. It is also used to treat chickenpox and cold sores in children. Valacyclovir is an antiviral medicine commonly used for the following conditions caused by herpes viruses.
- To treat cold sore
- To treat, prevent, or reduce the spread of genital herpes, a sexually transmitted disease
- To treat shingles
- To treat chickenpox (children)
Valacyclovir may also be used for other conditions as determined by your healthcare provider.
Valacyclovir is an antiviral medicine that stops the growth of herpes viruses and reduces the amount of outbreaks you have. Valacyclovir does not remove the viruses from your body. Valacyclovir is available as Valtrex and generic valacyclovir in the following dosage forms that are taken by mouth.
